Dual Self-Portrait Workshop – Resilience in the Face of Adversity Exhibition
As part of the Resilience in the Face of Adversity exhibition, I ran a free community art therapy workshop exploring the theme of inner and outer identity through a creative process I call the Dual Self-Portrait.
This workshop invited participants to reflect on the different sides of themselves – how they appear to the world, and who they are internally. As an artist and designer with a background in art therapy, I’m really passionate about creating safe spaces where people can connect with their emotions, explore their stories, and express what words often can't reach.
The Dual Self-Portrait activity is simple in structure but powerful in practice. Participants created a self-portrait divided in two: one side representing their outer self (what people see on the surface), and the other side showing their inner world (emotions, struggles, hopes, past experiences, and inner voice).
We began with group discussion and journaling exercises to identify traits, behaviours, and feelings connected to both aspects of the self. Then, using drawing and mixed materials, each person created their own visual representation of this duality. For some, the differences were subtle. For others, the contrast between inner and outer self was stark – and revealing.
This workshop was about self-awareness, but also about acceptance. It created an opportunity to check in with how aligned we feel in our day-to-day lives, and whether we’re showing up as our full selves. Some people noticed gaps between who they are and how they’re perceived. Others shared feelings of vulnerability, strength, or transformation. Everyone brought something unique to the table.
One of the most beautiful parts of this workshop was the group reflection at the end. While no one was required to share their portrait, many chose to – and it sparked honest conversations about identity, resilience, and the invisible things we carry. These kinds of moments remind me why I do this work.
Big thanks to the team at the Courthouse Mulgrave Galleries for hosting the session and to all the participants who turned up with open minds and creative spirits. This was more than just a workshop – it was a shared space of connection and care.
